COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Just one week before opening the 2018-19 season at Florida State, sophomore Grant House was named to the World University Games roster as announced Thursday morning by USA Swimming.
"Grant House is one of the hardest working swimmers I've ever coached," coach Bob Bowman said. "His progress in the past year has been remarkable. He's gone from being a promising junior swimmer to a bona fide world-class competitor."
House qualified for the Games through his 200FR performance at the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships in Irvine, Calif. this past summer. The sophomore swam a lifetime-best 1:46.95 in the long course meter event, which at the time was the 24th-best time in the world in 2017-18 in the 200FR LCM.
One of the higher profile signees by coach Bowman out of high school, House arrived in Tempe and quickly proved that his skill could translate to the collegiate level. With just one season under his belt, House already owns or shares six school records in the 200FR relay, 400FR relay, 800FR relay (3) and the third best time in school history in the 200IM. House capped off his freshman season last year with All-America honors in the 200FR and in the 800FR relay.
"It's definitely quite the honor to be selected to the World University Games," House said. "I'm very excited for the opportunity to represent American in Naples, Italy, and it'll be with a really strong group of collegiate athletes on the men's and women's side."
Eighteen different college programs are represented on the roster, with defending national champion Texas leading with the way with eight swimmers, meanwhile the ever-competitive Pac-12 conference boasts 12 swimmers combined from Stanford, Cal and ASU.
The seven-day competition is scheduled for July 4-10, 2019. Full competition information can be found here.
