BOULDER, Colo. – Another incredible effort and two FBS records from placekicker Zane Gonzalez were not enough as the Arizona State University football team fell, 40-16, at Colorado in Boulder on Saturday night.
Gonzalez kicked three field goals of 50 or more yards, including a school-record 59-yarder in the fourth quarter. In the process he set two FBS records, breaking Dustin Hopkins' FBS record for career points by a kicker and also tying the FBS record for most field goals of 50 or more yards in a single game with three.
The Sun Devil offense struggled outside of that, combining for just 199 yards of total offense while being forced into eight three-and-outs in the contest.
Colorado's (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12) well-balanced attack combined for 580 yards of total offense behind an incredible effort from running back Phillip Lindsay. Lindsay finished with 219 yards on the ground and three touchdowns while adding four catches for 20 yards.
Lindsay became the first individual to rush for over 200 yards against ASU since Washington State's Jerome Harrison went for 240 in November of 2005.
Manny Wilkins was 13-of-35 for 149 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Sun Devuls (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) while Tim White had five catches for 97 yards.
Colorado got on the board first, driving 81 yards in under three minutes on their first possession of the game to take a quick 7-0 advantage.
The Sun Devils would take advantage of an early Colorado muffed punt later in the frame, turning the recovery into six points five plays later as Wilkins found Kody Kohl for the tight ends first touchdown reception of the season. For Kohl it broke a streak of 11 consecutive games without a touchdown reception.
Colorado responded on its very next drive after moving inside the Arizona State 5-yard line. But the Sun Devil defense answered the challenge, holding the Buffaloes to a field goal and responding in kind on their own next drive on Gonzalez's 51-yard field goal to even things at 10-10 with 10:57 left in the second quarter.
It was all CU from there, however, as the Buffaloes reeled off 10 straight points to close out the half and take a 23-10 lead into the locker room before making it 17 unanswered with a 75-yard touchdown rush from Lindsay on the very first play of the second half for a 30-10 advantage and never looked back.
The Sun Devils return home next weekend to celebrate their annual homecoming game against Washington State on Saturday, October 22. The game will kick at 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.
