PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Arizona State University wrestling team dropped to 6-3 on the season after falling 21-12 in the second dual of the day at the Stanford Duals in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday.
The Sun Devils (6-3, 2-0 Pac-12) struggled to get on the board early, losing their first five matches of the day to fall behind 15-0 to the Scarlet Knights (8-1).
In one of the top matches of the day, #14 Blake Stauffer got the Sun Devils on the board with a hard-fought 7-6 victory over #10 Greg Zannetti at 174 pounds. With the victory, the redshirt sophomore improved to 16-5 on the season and the win was Stauffer’s fourth over a ranked opponent this season.
Following a pin by No. 13 Dan Rinaldi over ASU’s Jake Meredith again showed why we might be one of the top defensive wrestlers in the nation with a 3-0 decision over Dan Seidenberg. Meredith’s lone point given up on the day so far was against Stanford on a stalling call.
Meredith is now 19-2 on the season and has allowed just two or fewer points in 10 of those and only more than four on three occasions this season, excluding his loss by fall to Quentin Wright in the final of the South Scuffle.
No. 14 Levi Cooper earned a 6-5 decision over Billy Smith in the heavyweight matchup and Dalton Miller downed Joseph Langell, 8-4, in the final match of the day but it wasn’t enough for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State has one remaining dual on the day to No. 23 Penn to wrap up competition for the weekend. A recap will be available following the conclusion of the event.
