PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Arizona State University wrestling team fell to 1-2 on the day and 6-4 on the season following a loss to No. 23 Penn, 27-10, on Sunday to conclude the Stanford Duals in Palo Alto, Calif.

Joel Smith got his first dual victory of the year (outside a medical forfeit against Stanford) with a 6-1 decision over Troy Hernandez but the Sun Devils were already down 12-0 at that point and couldn’t seem to find a way to get back into things.

No. 14 Blake Stauffer improved to 3-0 on the day with a 14-2 major decision over Harrison Cook and he now has a 17-5 record on the season, which is the second-best on the team.

In a battle of top-10 powers, No. 8 Jake Meredith suffered just his third defeat of the season at the hands of No. 7 Mikah Burak at 197 pounds in a 5-2 decision to drop to 19-3 on the year.

No. 14 Levi Cooper knocked off Kyle Cowan in the heavyweight matchup to round out the scoring for ASU.

With the loss, ASU is now 6-4 on the year but improved to 2-0 in Pac-12 competition following a victory against Stanford earlier in the day.  The team returns to action on Friday, Jan. 11 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Arizona State University wrestling team dropped to 6-3 on the season after falling 21-12 in the second dual of the day at the Stanford Duals in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday.

The Sun Devils (6-3, 2-0 Pac-12) struggled to get on the board early, losing their first five matches of the day to fall behind 15-0 to the Scarlet Knights (8-1).

In one of the top matches of the day, #14 Blake Stauffer got the Sun Devils on the board with a hard-fought 7-6 victory over #10 Greg Zannetti at 174 pounds.  With the victory, the redshirt sophomore improved to 16-5 on the season and the win was Stauffer’s fourth over a ranked opponent this season.

Following a pin by No. 13 Dan Rinaldi over ASU’s Kevin Radford, Jake Meredith again showed why we might be one of the top defensive wrestlers in the nation with a 3-0 decision over Dan Seidenberg.  Meredith’s lone point given up on the day so far was against Stanford on a stalling call.

Meredith is now 19-2 on the season and has allowed just two or fewer points in 10 of those and only more than four on three occasions this season, excluding his loss by fall to Quentin Wright in the final of the South Scuffle.

No. 14 Levi Cooper earned a 6-5 decision over Billy Smith in the heavyweight matchup and Dalton Miller downed Joseph Langell, 8-4, in the final match of the day but it wasn’t enough for the Sun Devils.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Arizona State University wrestling team opened the Stanford Duals on Sunday with a rout over the Stanford Cardinal, 30-7, for the second win in conference competition this season.

The Sun Devils (6-2, 2-0 Pac-12) jumped out to a 16-0 lead through the first four matches following victories by Ares Carpio, Matt Kraus, Nathan Hoffer and Joel Smith at the 133-165 weight classes and it was smooth sailing from there.

The early victories at the lower weights paved the way for the Sun Devil big guys to do what they have done best this season: win.

ASU’s four ranked wrestlers at 174, 184, 197 and HWT all posted victories on Sunday, outscoring the Cardinal 33-6 in their four matches.

No. 14 Blake Stauffer got things going with a 10-1 major decision over Dylan Morris at 174 pounds, setting up a 17-4 rout by No. 15 Kevin Radford over Ryan Davies in the 184 weight class.

No. 8 Jake Meredith had to grind one out against Michael Sojka, winning 2-1, but the one point came courtesy of a stalling call in a match where Sojka just couldn’t find a way to take the senior down.

Levi Cooper downed Dan Scherer in the heavyweight matchup to seal the deal of the Sun Devils with a 4-0 victory.
