2012 Southern Scuffle Final Results
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Arizona State University wrestling team wrapped up its second tournament of the season with four medal winners and a ninth-place finish at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Senior Jake Meredith posted one of the best tournament runs in his career en route to a runner-up finish at 197 pounds on Wednesday. Meredith took care of business against Ohio’s Phillip Wellington in the semifinals, 4-2, before being pinned by No. 3 Quentin Wright of Penn State at 5:34 into the championship final.
Despite the loss, Meredith improved to 17-2 on the season and was the team’s top finisher in the competition.
At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Blake Stauffer was forced to take medical forfeits in his matches today, despite making it to the semifinals. Even so, Stauffer was granted a sixth-place finish overall – his second medal in two tournaments this season.
Kevin Radford had two one-point decisions to open the day in the consolation bracket Brett Pfarr of Minnesota, 5-4, before defeating John Eblen of Missouri, 3-2. Radford would fall to No. 8 Mike Larson in the consolation semifinals in a tough 3-1 decision and dropped the final match of the day against Oklahoma State’s Chris Chionuma to take sixth overall.
Heavyweight Levi Cooper took eighth overall after being pinned by Penn State’s James Lawson in the seventh-place competition.
The Sun Devils finished with 58 points to take ninth overall and were just 6.5 points behind seventh-place Ohio. The team will have a short couple days of respite before taking part in the Stanford Duals this weekend in Palo Alto, Calif.
