HAMPTON, VA. -- The Sun Devils struggled in the lower weights and gave up bonus point victories in three of the first six matches as they dropped the opener of the Virginia Duals, 22-19, to North Dakota State.
ASU's early struggles left them in a 22-6 hole entering ASU’s strength in the upper weights and the team could not stage the comeback.
No. 9 Trent Sprenkle knocked off Ares Carpio with an 18-2 tech fall at 125 pounds to start the competition and that set the tone for the rest of the match as ASU gave up major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds and a pin at 165 pounds by No. 6 Steven Monk over Parker Madl.
ASU’s big guys tried to mount a rally starting with a 3-2 decision by Blake Stauffer over Kurtis Julson at 174 pounds, followed by decisions by Kevin Radford and Jake Meredith. However, the team couldn’t find any bonus points until Levi Cooper majored John Gosewelle, 14-6, in the final match of the day and by then it was too late.
