Southern Scuffle Brackets: Day One
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The strength of the Arizona State University wrestling team has been in the upper weight classes all season and after three weeks of rest, that hasn't changed as the four Sun Devils at the top of the weights are the lone competitors remaining after one day of competition at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Senior Jake Meredith cruised into tomorrow's semifinal at McKenzie Arena as we went 3-0 on the day to improve to 16-1 on the season. The No. 7 wrestler in the country at 197 pounds, Meredith pinned Appalachian State's Paul Weiss in 1:21 in his first match of the day before handling Air Force's Joshua Mohn to advance to the quarterfinals.
There, Meredith knocked off No. 16 Niko Brown of Chattanooga to advance to a semifinal matchup tomorrow against Ohio's Phillip Wellington for a chance to advance to the finals.
Redshirt freshman Blake Stauffer also punched his ticket to tomorrow's semifinal after a day full of duking it out with the armed forces.
After a 15-2 major decision over Air Force's Daniel Barringer in the tournament opener, Stauffer got all he could handle from Army's Coleman Gracey in a match that entered sudden victory tied at 9. Stauffer struck first through, taking down Gracey in the frame to earn the 11-9 victory and pushing him through to the quarterfinals where he completed the armed force trifecta in pinning Navy's Matt Miller in five minutes.
The performance improved Stauffer to 15-2 on the season and set up his toughest match of the season tomorrow, as he will take on top-ranked and defending NCAA Champion Chris Perry of Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals.
At 184 pounds, Kevin Radford lived to fight another day though he will have to be on his toes in the consolation bracket following a 2-1 effort today. Radford defeated Virginia's Zach Nye, 10-4, in his opener before knocking off Chattanooga's John Shrader in the round of 32 to clinch a quarterfinal berth.
He had his work cut out for him there, however, as No. 4 Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota pinned Radford in 1:23 to knock him to the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Heavyweight Levi Cooper faced a similar fate, beating Northern Colorado's Henry Chirino (1-0) and Missouri's Devon Mellon (2-0) before getting knocked off by Nick Gwiazdowski in the quarterfinals in a lopsided 17-1 tech fall to drop to the consolation bracket.
Following the first day of competition, the Sun Devils find themselves in eighth out of 25 teams with 42.5 points.
Doors open tomorrow at McKenzie Arena at 8 a.m. ET with action beginning at 9 a.m. All of the top wrestlers are still alive and have set up and exciting semifinal round at 11 a.m. The finals and medal matches will all take place at 6 p.m.
Today's attendance of 2,543 was a 15 percent increase over last year's opening day crowd of 2,210. With a number of marquee matches on the horizon for the second day, UTC should top last year's two-day total of 4,373.
