TEMPE, Ariz. -In the first match of a two-match weekend, the No. 21 Arizona State women's tennis team (15-4, 5-3 Pac-12) fell to the No. 11 Golden Bears of California by a score of 6-1, Friday, at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.
"I think it's a little déjà vu for the last couple matches," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "We have a lot respect for Cal but I thought we could have put up a better fight at home. Freshman Ebony Panoho won the lone point for the Sun Devils handily defeating Cal's Annie Goranssen, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Joanna Smith also battled tooth and nail with Golden Bear Tayler Davis playing 7-6 (9), 2-6 (10-3) before the match was called.
"I thought Joanna and Ebony played quite well on their courts," said McInerney. "This is young group that haven't had the success against the better teams. We just have to get over the hump. We didn't do that today."
The Sun Devils compete against No. 13 Stanford, tomorrow, at Noon PT back at the Whiteman Tennis Center. Please be advised of road closures on Saturday due to the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship and extra traffic due to Football Fan Fest.
"We're certainly going to have to play better than we have today. I just want us to be competitive and play tooth and nail with Stanford tomorrow. Forget about winning and losing and go out and play enough tennis."
