FLAFSTAFF - The Arizona State University track and field teams wrapped up the final meet of the regular indoor season on Thursday, scoring several solid results at the NAU Tune-Up in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Junior Anna Jelmini smashed her previous indoor best in the shot put with a mark of 17.35m (56-11.25) to win the competition. The throw was eight inches further than her previous career best of 17.15m (56-03.25), set last year at the NCAA Championships.
With the mark Jelmini likely solidified a bid to the NCAA Championships in the event as she would rank in the top five in the nation with throw if the season were to end today. Additionally, Jelmini improved upon her hold on second-place in ASU's all-time record books in the event.
Derick Hinch continued his solid indoor season, dominating the men's pole vault with a winning clearance of 5.40m (17-08.50). Hinch is currently ranked in the top-10 nationally in the event and won on Thursday by just under six inches over his closest competition.
While she didn't score a personal best this week, Chelsea Cassulo remained unbeaten on the season in the womens' weight throw. Cassulo's throw of 20.72m (67-11.75) was over three feet better than her closest competitor on Thursday and made her a perfect five-for-five in the event this year.
In the women's pole vault, San Diego St. transfer Heather Arseneau continued to be one of ASU's top pick-ups of the offseason as she set yet another personal best with her fifth-place finish and a mark of 4.05m (13-03.50). The jump moved her into sole possession of third on ASU's all-time indoor pole vaulting list behind only former NCAA Champion April Kubishta and current Sun Devil junior Shaylah Simpson.
Arseneau was the highest-finishing collegiate athlete in the field on Thursday.
Constance Ezugha won the women's long jump event with her season's best leap of 5.91m (19-04.75) while Chris Benard won the men's side of the competition with a best mark of 7.40m (24-03.50).
The Sun Devils swept the 800m competition, led by a 1-2-3 finish on the men's side with Kyle Elliott (1:55.54) and Trevor Landry (1:56.03).
Dalanne Bartlette came out victorious on the women's end with a career best run of 2:16.53.
Will Henry had a pair of runner-up finishes, setting season's best at 200 meters (21.55) and 400 meters (47.63) in the process.
Kyle Lillie came out victorious in the men's shot put with a throw of 17.21m (56-05.75).
The Sun Devils return to action next weekend as they kick off the championship season at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Seattle, Wash. The event will begin Friday and continue into Saturday.
