ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 21st-ranked Arizona State baseball team fell to New Mexico, 15-6, on Monday night at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M.
Max Rossiter collected three hits and scored a run, and Jake Peevyhouse secured a two-run double for his first collegiate hit to lead the Sun Devils (19-13).
Billy Young (0-2) recorded the loss as five pitchers took the mound for the Sun Devils. Young allowed six runs, including three earned, on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. Right-hander Josh McAlister gave up one hit and struck out one in two innings pitched.
Andrew Aplin led off the first inning with a double down the left-field line and scored two batters later on an RBI sacrifice fly by Joey DeMichele to put the Devils ahead early, 1-0.
The Sun Devils extended their advantage to two in the second after Rossiter opened the frame with a single and advanced to third on an error and a groundout before an RBI single by Trever Allen brought him home.
New Mexico scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second to cut its deficit to one, 2-1.
The Lobos (15-16) then scored 14 runs over the next four innings, including four runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings, as well as two in the fifth, to jump out to a 13-run lead, 15-2.
James McDonald recorded an RBI double in the seventh and ASU scored three runs in the eighth inning on RBI doubles by a pair of freshman. Peevyhouse drove in two for his first career RBI and Drew Stankiewicz followed up with a one-run extra-base hit.
Right-hander Zak Miller made the start for ASU and gave up one earned run on four hits in one inning. He loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning, but got himself out of the jam by inducing a groundout.
Left-hander Rudy Jaramillo (3-2) earned the win for the Lobos, conceding five earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.
The Sun Devils will look to even the two-game series against the Lobos on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. (MT) at Isotopes Park. CBS College Sports will televise the game live, with Kevin Stocker and James Bates providing the play-by-play and analysis.
