TEMPE, Ariz. – In Arizona State softball’s opening game of Pac-12 action, the Sun Devils (29-3, 1-0 Pac-12) topped in-state rival Arizona, 4-2, on Friday night with an Elizabeth Caporuscio walk-off two-run homer in the eighth. Fans can catch the entire State Farm Territorial Cup Series webcast on FoxSportsArizona.com.
Elizabeth Caporuscio brought ASU back to life after a slow start led to an extra inning contest. Caporuscio hit a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the eighth for her 11th long ball of the year to capture the 4-2 (8) victory.
Arizona (19-5, 0-1 Pac-12) led the game off with two-straight walks in the first to plate leadoff batter Hallie Wilson on a sacrifice foul fly to left by Jessica Spigner. In the top of the third, the Wildcats made it a two-run lead when a bases loaded and hit-by-pitch situation from the ASU defense walked around Kristen Arriola.
The tandem of Alix Johnson and Annie Lockwood produced a two-out rally in the third after Johnson hit a double to center followed by Lockwood’s sixth home run of the season to tie it at 2-2.
What ensued was a pitching duel between Dallas Escobedo (10-2 with the win) and UA’s Shelby Babcock and Kenzie Fowler, who came in during the fifth. The board remained tied at 2-apiece until the bottom of the eighth when Caporuscio’s heroics tallied the first win of the State Farm Territorial Cup Series in favor of the Sun Devils.
Escobedo struck out eight in the win while Arizona’s Fowler garners the loss and drops to 8-2 on the season.
