TEMPE - The Arizona State University track and field team opened the 2012 outdoor season on Friday as the team hosted the annual Baldy Castillo Invitational at the Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe.
Several Sun Devils took part in Friday's action that saw only a couple of events contested. The highlight of the night came in the men's 1,500-meter run to cap the night off as Darius Terry clocked a new personal record in 3:43.68 to win the event.
Terry is competing unattached for the Sun Devils this spring season, but the 2011 second-team All-America broke the meet record with the finish, taking down Christian Smith's eight-year-old time of 3:44.59. Since Terry competed unattached, the time won't count towards the ASU record books but it would have been the eighth-fastest time in school history.
Terry's Sun Devil teammate Josh Walker was the top attached Sun Devil in the field, finishing fifth in 3:52.23.
In the women's 1,500 meters, freshman Shaina Corbin was the top collegian in the field as she finished second overall in 4:41.77.
In the field events, the Sun Devils got another look at the future as Chelsea Cassulo - a transfer from UNLV who will redshirt this season - won the hammer throw with a mark of 64.83m (212-08) to win the competition by over 20 feet. Cassulo was also competing unattached and thus her mark doesn't count towards any records, but if it stood, it would have been the third-best throw in ASU's history.
Cassulo paced the way for three attached Sun Devils as Ashley Lampley was second with a big personal record with her throw of 58.47m (191-10). The mark was good for the sixth-best toss in ASU history.
Behind Lampley was senior Cj Navarro with a toss of 55.67m (182-08), a mark she achieved on her final attempt to help Arizona State into a sweep of the top spots.
The Sun Devils will return to action tomorrow with the field events beginning at 10 a.m. MST with the women's pole vault and the running events commencing at 1 p.m. MST.
