POSTGAME QUOTES: Coach Sendek talks about Chris Colvin's great effort off the bench.

Nov. 18, 2012

Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

QUOTING COACH SENDEK
really had some difficult guards to defend. Jamie Adams is a terrific player, he can shoot with range, and is quick of the gribble. Dealing with him off the ball screens was a nightmare. Obviously he had 17 points at the half, seven in the second half, I think Chris Colvin did a tremendous job on him. And our guys with a lot of energy on the defensive end of the floor, kind of fueled our ability to get some separation. With Reggie Lewis, Jamie Adams and Jamari Bradshaw, they have some guys that are good off the gribble and were making shoots. They even made some tough shots. But a good win for our team, and good team effort. We will try to build off of this for a quick turnaround on Tuesday."

ON THE UP-TEMPO STYLE OFFENSIVE
"We talked"I was really pleased with the effort that our guys had midway through the second half. Our opponent today about it all along, that we really want to try get out, strike and transition if we can. That's not always going to be possible. But we at least want to have that as part of our package. I thought there was different spurts today, were we really capitalized. In every game, you still have to come down and execute in the half court sets. But I thought we had a numbers of really good offensive possessions."

ON THE SHOOT SELECTION AND THE TOGETHERNESS COMPARED TO THE FIRST GAME
"I saw definite improvement. I was not thrilled with our shoot selection in the first game. I thought for the most part today, we were better. I still think we can do a better job of working inside out. But in a weeks time there was growth in that area, some improvement."

ON THE DIVERSITY OF SCORING WITH FIVE DOUBLE FIGURE GUYS TWO GAMES IN A ROW
"Outside of understanding what's a good shot, and having some patience at times, the guys are really trying to make each other better, and play together. I think this group genuinely likes each other, which carries over to the court."

ON THE EXAMPLE CHRIS (COLVIN) SETS COMING OFF THE BENCH
"We talked about that yesterday, with our whole team. We were going to ask Chris Colvin to come off the bench. Even though in our eyes he's a starter, he is a very valuable player for our team. But for us to have the best rotation, it just makes a lot of sense. The coaches and the players, we threw that at Chris Colvin, and he's embraced it. I'm not a big comparison guy, but if this wasn't Chris Colvin's best game, it certainly was among them at both ends of the floor. He really did a great job for us. When Carrick Felix picked up his early fourth foul in the second half, Chris Colvin defensive effort was a difference maker for us."

MAINTAINING ENERGY THROUGHOUT THE GAME
"No, I think in the first half in particular, Jamie Adams got going on us. In the second half, there was several sequences, were we didn't finish the play. I know one time they got four points in a row, off of scurries, and they ended with the ball and scored. On time they had the outlet and we lost it and they scored. It's seems like we couldn't get any traction. So the first half it was hard to separation because of Jamie Adams, and in the second half we just shoot ourselves in the foot. Much like we did last week, of being out quick to a few balls, some second shoots, so that made it difficult. The other guys stepped up and made some plays for them. In my mind right now they have the baseline two, that's challenged in front of their bench, and the three in transition, I don't think it even hit the net, it was just bang."

CONCERNED WITH HAVING THREE SMALL GUARDS
"No, I'm very comfortable playing three guards. We've done that many times before through the years, so that's something that's fine for us. Obviously, at times we are not the biggest team on the perimeter, especially when Carrick Felix is out of the game, we are under sized on the perimeter."

ON THE IMPACT JAHII (CARSON) HAS
"He's had a tremendous impact. He's certainly somebody who is a great ambassador for our program right now. People know who he is, they talk about him, and other recruits identify with him. He's a heck of a player, and was terrific today. You look at his line here, he did a lot of great things for our team. He's only going to get better and better, it was just his second game."

ON JAHII BEING THE STAR LIKE HARDEN WAS
"That's not were we are at right now. What we are trying to do is be a team. Jahii Carson is a really important part of that team. He's incredibly unselfish, he just wants to help us win. We really believe in him, we have a lot of faith in him, we love him, but we have to allow him to develop at his own rate and be himself."

ON THE GUYS NOT BEING READY FOR THE PASSES FROM Jahii Carson
"That's part of it, just playing with a guy like that or even Chris Colvin, guys with great vision, guys have to be ready to catch and score. That all comes with playing together and getting familiar with each other."

ON TWO RECRUITS GETTING SIGNED
"We had two players signed in the early signing period. Egor Koulechov, he about 6'5, an attends Sagemont High School, in South Florida. He plays for in my mind one of the very best coaches in the country, coach Adam Ross. Egor Koulechov is an astute student of the game. He follows NBA basketball closer than Hubie Brown. He is a tough, hard nose, competitive young man. He is very skilled, can shoot the ball in range and can pass. I just think he's a winner in every way. We also got Chance Murray, who is 6'3, attends Price High School in Los Angeles, Calif.. Likewise, plays for coach Michael Lynch, which is one of the premier coaches in the country. Two great programs, that Egor Koulechov and Chance Murray play for. Chance Murray, is actually a year young. I just think he has an unlimited potential, he can handle the ball, shoot it and defend, and even comfortable playing in the post sum. I think both of these young men are just off the chart character guys. Can't wait for you to meet them. They are both excellent students, good people, and just really know how to play and have an excellent skill level. So we are tremendously excited about the two guys, who decided to become Sun Devils."

"We've been really blessed to have tremendous international players through the years. We have a few guys now, with Egor joining them, that tradition will continue." Coach Sendek

ON BRINGING A LOT OF EUROPEANS ON THE TEAM
"We've been really blessed to have tremendous international players through the years. We have a few guys now, with Egor joining them, that tradition will continue. I think it's very much in concert with Arizona State University global reach. Our school President Dr. Crow is making a difference, not only here in the United States but around the world. We have initiatives and partnerships in a numbers of countries. We have students from 140 different countries on this campus. So I think it's a reflection on that, as much as anything."

ON JON (GILLING) HAVING A DOUBLE DOUBLE
"I thought last week he was really as aggressive as he's been. We really complemented him, even though he didn't get as many, but he was much more aggressive, and we need that from him. Jon is a pretty big strong kid, it's something he can do. He's no shrinking violet, we need him to do that. Especially for that being an area of focus for our team, we have to continue to get better."
