BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Arizona State University wrestling team improved to 2-1 to start the 2012-13 season, posting a shutout victory against Campbell on Saturday but coming just shy of unseating Bloomsburg in a epic dual.
Following a victory against North Carolina last night, The Sun Devils fell to Bloomsburg, 18-16, to open Saturday’s competition in Buies Creek, N.C., but rebounded for a 43-0 rout of Campbell in the nightcap.
Recaps of each contest are below. The Sun Devil will take on The Citadel tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET to round out its opening weekend of competition.
ASU 43, Campbell 0
The Sun Devils recorded their first shutout since 2008 as the team easily handled the host Campbell Fighting Camels to improve to 2-1 to start the 2012-13 season.
ASU shut out Campbell, 43-0, and scored over 40 points in a dual for the first time since a 41-6 blowout over Embry Riddle in 2010. ASU hadn’t shut out an opponent since defeating Portland, 40-0, in Nov. 14, 2008.
Dalton Miller earned his first victory of the season in a 11-3 major decision over Eric Montoya to set the tone for the rest of the bout.
Shane McGough scored a pin over Tanner Bidelspach at the 2:02 mark to set up a Matt Kraus victory at 141 pounds in a 5-0 decision.
Nathan Hoffer became the first Sun Devil to three wins on the year as he took an 18-7 major decision over Daniel Luty before Codey Combs won the 157 matchup to a medical forfeit.
Parker Madl earned his first victory as a Sun Devil at 165 pounds in 12-8 decision over Paul Duggan and Jacob Graham won his 2012-13 debut in a 12-5 decision over Cody Ryba.
Kevin Radford won his second match of the day in pinning Taylor McGiffen at 5:52 and Jake Meredith joined Hoffer in the three-win club with a 9-2 decision over John Merickel.
Levi Cooper rounded out the evening with a technical fall over Brenden Lindsay, 16-1, to bring ASU to its final tally.

Bloomsburg 18, ASU 16
Sophomore 125-pounder Dalton Miller got dropped his second consecutive of the season to the Huskies' Sean Boylan in a 4-2 decision to give Bloomsburg the 3-0 lead early.
Bloomsburg followed that with a Nick Wilcox pin over Shane McGough just 1:28 into the match to go ahead 9-0 just two bouts into the dual but Matt Kraus answered with a 13-5 major decision over Matt Rappo for his first victory as a Sun Devil to bring ASU back within 9-4.
Nathan Hoffer remained perfect on the season as he downed Josh Roosa, 5-2, and ASU inched closer in making the score 9-7
The Huskies answered in the form of No. 6 Frank Hickman, who earned a 9-4 decision over Codey Combs (9-4) at 157 pounds to pave the way for a Josh Veltre decision (9-7) over the Sun Devils' Parker Madl to give Bloomsburg the 15-7 through six matches.
ASU's upper weight classes answered the call, though, ripping off three consecutive victories at 174, 184 and 197 pounds to make things interesting heading into the heavyweight bout
Redshirt freshman Blake Stauffer continued his impressive start as a Sun Devil, shutting out Chris Smith 6-0 and that allowed Kevin Radford to put ASU back in the lead with a 10-4 decision over Andre Petroski.
Jake Meredith made things in the day's most exciting match, upsetting No. 14 Richard Perry in a high-scoring 18-12 decision to put ASU up 16-15 for its first lead of the contest
However, the biggest upset of the day came as Justin Grant was able to take the decision over No. 8 Levi Cooper in the heavyweight match, giving three points to the Huskies and sealing the deal with the 18-16 victory.
