TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field team finished the opening day of the collegiate/open section of the 33rd Sun Angel Classic on Friday night, with several student athletes competing in the 1,500m, 5,000m and hammer throw competitions.

Junior Jordan Clarke had the mark of the day in the premier section of the men’s hammer for the #10 ASU men, launching the implement 64.79m (212-07) to take the top collegiate spot and second overall behind only Jim Steacy of the Chinook Track Club.

Clarke came just a couple centimeters shy of tying his personal best set at the ASU Invitational just two weekends ago and showed his consistency today with his second best throw coming in at 64.76m.

In the women’s hammer throw, Cj Navarro took ninth in the premier section with a throw of 56.00m (183-09).

The Sun Devils had a couple men in the 1,500-meter ‘C’ race that took place on Friday evening, with Garrett Baker-Slama taking second overall in 3:54.60 and Jesus Rivera finishing third in 3:55.43.

ASU returns to the track tomorrow for the main portion of the Sun Angel Classic, with field events starting with the men’s discus at 10 a.m. PT and the running events getting underway at 2 p.m. PT.  The event will feature a ‘premier’ section of the top competitors entered in this year’s meet, set to get underway around 5:30 p.m.  A live blog for the competition will begin around 1 p.m. and a link can be found above.
