TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona State University track and field team had a couple student-athletes finish up competition at the Jim Click Combined Events in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday with heptathlete Keia Pinnick leading the way.
Pinnick posted a career-best score of 5,622 to finish fifth overall in the competition and second among collegiate athletes. Pinnick was just 70 points behind 2011 NCAA heptathlon champion Ryann Krais of Kansas State and her score places her third all-time on ASU’s heptathlon list.
Pinnick opened the day with the top collegiate mark in the long jump and a leap of 6.02m (19-09.00) to get the day rolling. Pinnick would go on to post a solid throw of 33.10m (108-7) in the javelin to set her up for her best event in the 800-meter run.
In the final event, Pinnick was the top finisher by two seconds over her nearest competition as she clocked an impressive time of 2:10.78 to wrap up the day. The time was good for the fastest heptathlon 800-meter run in school history, breaking her own record.
Pinnick’s 2,344 second-day points were also a new career best and her 5,622 total point beat her previous career best by close to 170 points.
In the men’s decathlon, junior Jeremy Marcinko was the top Sun Devil with 6,450 points to finish 11th overall. Jamie Sandys managed 6,058 points despite no-heighting in the pole vault.
The Sun Devils return to action at home next weekend as the team hosts the 33rd Annual Sun Angel Classic at Sun Angel Stadium with collegiate events taking place beginning Friday, April 6 and continuing all day on Saturday, April 7.
