TEMPE – The Arizona State University wrestling team wrapped up the 2012 season on Friday as junior heavyweight Levi Cooper was unable to advance to Saturday’s Championship rounds at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Cooper got the day started out on the right note in the consolation bracket as we won his first two bouts of the day to advance to the fourth round of the consolation bracket.
There, Cooper faced the tournament’s fifth-seeded Bobby Telford of Iowa for a chance to guarantee his second consecutive All-American finish. Telford came out victorious, however, shutting out Cooper, 6-0, and eliminating him from the competition.
Cooper opened the day with a victory over Boston University’s Kevin Innis, cruising 6-1 decision to keep his tournament alive. Cooper earned another decision over Columbia’s Kevin Lester, 5-2, in the next round to advance to his final matchup against Telford.
With the performance, the Sun Devils earned two points and finished 56th overall. Arizona State will return to action in November, with a slew of freshman becoming a year older and giving the team some much-needed experience and depth under head coach Shawn Charles.
