TEMPESamantha Henderson leads the heptathlon, all three women for the Arizona State University track & field program are in the Top 3 of the standings and two men are in the Top 8 in the decathlon as the first day of competition wrapped up on Friday night in the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships taking place in Tucson, Ariz. The women’s heptathlon and the men’s decathlon are the first two events of the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships that are being held at Roy P. Drachman Stadium on the Arizona campus this weekend.

Of the 12 competitors in the women’s heptathlon, the Top 3 positions are occupied by Sun Devils as Henderson leads the way with 3,396 points while Keia Pinnick is second with 3,237 points and Christabel Nettey, in the first heptathlon of her career, is in third with 3,197 points. In the men’s 10-event competition that has 13 entrants, Jamie Sandys is currently fifth overall with 3,675 points while Austin Prince is seventh with 3,540 points and Jeremy Marcinko 12th with 3,353 points.

Henderson took the first day lead as she won a pair of individual events as well as recording a personal best in the 100m hurdles to open the competition as she ran 13.93, her first time under the 14-second barrier. After scoring 988 points in the hurdles, Henderson shot in to the lead as she won the high jump with a clearance of 1.72m (5-07.75) for 879 points before taking the shot put with a toss of 12.68m (41-07.25) to add another 706 points. Henderson closed out the day with 823 points as she ran 25.71 in the 200m dash, finishing seventh overall on the event.

Pinnick occupied second place with a personal-best score through the first day of competition and placed in the Top 4 in three of the four events, including winning the 200m dash at the end of the day in a personal-best time of 24.07 for 974 points. Pinnick opened with a personal best time of 13.87 in the 100m hurdles to collect 997 points before taking fourth place in the high jump by equalling her personal-best clearance of 1.63m (5-04.25) for 771 points. Pinnick also scored 495 points in the shot put to place 10th overall in the event with her toss of 9.48m (31-01.25).

Nettey opened her first heptathlon event with one of her top events, the 100m hurdles, and won the race in 13.71, to score 1,020 points and an early lead. From there, she cleared 1.66m (5-05.25) in the high jump to take second place in the event and add 806 points before finishing eighth in the shot put with a toss of 9.63m (31-07.25) for 505 points. Nettey closed out the day with a time of 25.23 in the 200m dash to score an additional 866 points as she finished sixth overall in the event.

On the men’s side, Sandys finished the first day right where he was one year ago as he stands fifth overall through five events. On the day, Sandys’ best point total came in the high jump as he cleared a personal-best bar of 1.99m (6-06.25) to score 794 points. He finished 11th in the 100m dash (760 points) with a time of 11.42; eighth in the long jump (732 points) with a leap of 6.65m (21-10.00); eighth in the shot put (616 points) with a toss of 12.15m (39-10.25); and eighth in the 400m dash (764 points) in 51.12.

Prince is in the hunt for scoring points in the Top 8 this season as he posted two Top 6 finishes, including fourth in the 100m dash in 11.20 (817 points), which was a personal best, and sixth in the 400m dash in 50.44 (794 points). Prince also placed ninth in the long jump with a leap of 6.57m (21-06.75) for 713 points; 11th in the shot put with a mark of 11.15m (36-07.00) for 555 points; and tied for 10th in the high jump with a clearance of 1.84m (6-00.50) for an additional 661 points.

Marcinko posted three Top 10 finishes on the day to score a personal-best point total on the first day of action, finishing with three personal-best marks in the 100m dash (11.30 for 795 points); 6.34m (20-09.75) in the long jump for 661 points; and 51.19 in the 400m dash for 761 points. He also placed ninth in the shot put with a toss of 11.50m (37-08.75) for 576 points; and was 14th in the high jump with a clearance of 1.72m (5-07.75) for 560 points.

The multi-events will continue Saturday in Tucson with all other events in the Pac-10 Championships taking place next Friday and Saturday, also in Tucson.
