Berkeley, Calif. – Two home runs from Annie Lockwood fueled with a seven strikeout performance from Dallas Escobedo led the way Saturday afternoon as the No. 4 Sun Devil Softball team topped the No. 8 Cal Golden Bears for the second straight day 7-2. Escobedo took the win to move to 17-1 on the year while the Sun Devils now 35-2 on the year and 2-0 in conference play as Cal falls to 21-6 in the season and 0-2 in conference play.
The same start was in the cards for game two against the Bears as Cal jumped onto the scoreboard first as Frani Echavarria hit an RBI double down the left line to give Cal the 1-0 lead after one complete.
As the pitching battle between Dallas Escobedo and Arianna Erceg raged on, the Sun Devil bats finally started stirring out of their slumber in the fourth with an RBI single from Alix Johnson and a bases loaded walk that Mandy Urfer drew out of Erceg to take the lead and never look back.
The Sun Devils struck again in the fifth inning as a lead-off double from Lesley Rogers was followed up by a single to left from Sam Parlich, but Annie Lockwood had no plans to play small ball as she crushed a 1-0 pitch deep to center to bring three home and push it to 6-1.
While Cal showed some life in the sixth with a solo shot from Lindsey Ziegenhirt, that was all the Bears could muster up against the freshman hurler who was backed again by Annie Lockwood who placed the cherry on top in the top of the seventh with a solo shot of her own to push her home run total to eight on the year.
The Sun Devils will match-up with the Bears one last time tomorrow as they face-off at 11 a.m. in Berkeley at Levine-Fricke Field.
