TEMPE, Ariz.—The 11th-ranked Arizona State women’s golf team finished in a tie for sixth place after the first round of it’s home event, the PING/ASU Invitational at the ASU Karsten Golf Course. The Sun Devils shot a 5-over 293 for round one.
With temperatures unseasonably edging near triple digits, the Pac-10 teams were getting a preview of weather to come for the Conference Championships, April 17-19.
Reigning Pac-10 Champion Carlota Ciganda led the Sun Devils individually, shooting a 1-under 71 in the first round of play to tie for 10th. The junior carded four birdies on the day. Freshman Justine Lee is in a tie for 18th after the first round, shooting an even-par 72 on the day.
Junior Giulia Molinaro and freshman Daniela Ordonez tied for 42nd with a 3-over 75 in the first round. Freshman Laura Blanco shot a 5-over 77 to round out the Sun Devil’s line-up in a tie for 63rd.
Competing as individuals, Sun Devil freshman Brittany McKee shot a career-low 74 to tie for 31, while fellow freshman Nicole Jones shot a 78 to tie for 73rd on the first day.
UCLA currently leads the 17-team field with four players shooting under par in the first round. The Bruins golf game was as hot as the weather outside, shooting a 12-under 276 to set the pace on day one. Individually, Tiffany Lua, also from UCLA, leads the field, recording six birdies in the round for a score of 5-under 67.
The second round of the PING/ASU Invitational continues tomorrow from the par-72, 6,230-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course.
