TUCSON, Ariz.--With daylight dwindling on the golf course at Vistoso, the Arizona State women's golf team sits in third place after the second round of play was halted due to darkness.
"They had their challenges and got over their jitters a little bit," said head coach Melissa Luellen. "We have a good team if we take away five triple bogeys. It was just really penalizing."
Along with eight other teams, ASU will complete the remaining rounds Tuesday morning before third-round play. At the end of the day, Arizona State shot 16-over, having shot 296 in round one. Arizona leads the tournament at 5-under par.
Junior All-American Carlota Ciganda led ASU on the day and is sitting at even par after shooting a 74 in the first round to tie for ninth. Fellow Colombian freshmen Laura Blanco and Daniela Ordonez are tied for 26th at 5-over before concluding the second round. Freshman Justine Lee, who is at 6-over par to tie for 30th, fired a 74 in the first round.
Junior Giulia Molinaro is currently tied for 41st shooting 10-over after play stoppage. Eight holes through the front nine of the first round, Molinaro was staring at a 10-over par. Over the next 10 holes, Molinaro fired off six birdies to finish 4-over.
"It was really quite amazing," said Luellen. "Although her score didn't count, she made eight or nine birdies on the day. She played a lot of good golf and it's really hard to recover after hitting a cactus."
The third round of the Wildcat Invitational concludes tomorrow at the par-72, 6,321-yard Vistoso Golf Club.
"Right now in third place, with that many big numbers, it just shows me all the good stuff we're doing."
