TEMPE – It was a day of highs and lows for the Arizona State University wrestling team as the squad returned to the dual season with a win over conference rival Boise State followed by the worst loss in school history against Nebraska as the team wrapped up competition at the Sun Devil Duals on Thursday afternoon in Wells Fargo Arena. Full recaps of both duals are below:
Arizona State 27, Boise State 9
Arizona State won its first six matches against Boise State University to put the dual away early, jumping to a 21-0 lead and never looking back in the first of a double-header at the Sun Devil Duals.
Tommy Burriel got things started for ASU as he handled Derek Toney at the 197-weight class, 11-4, to put the Sun Devils up early. #14 Levi Cooper followed with his 17th victory of the season over J.T. Felix, 5-2, and ASU went up by six early.
Dalton Miller looked to be down and out at 125 against Isaac Romero before pulling off an exciting comeback. Leading 3-2 heading into the third period, Miller fell victim to a Romero reversal to fall behind 4-3 with just under a minute left. With seconds ticking down and the match looking like a loss, Miller pulled out his own reversal with just five seconds left to take the 5-4 lead and win the match.
Redshirt freshman Shane McGough kept the momentum going at 133 pounds, dominating Shawn Jones in the first period before putting him away with a pin at the 2:45 mark. Nathan Hoffer improved to 7-0 in duals with his own victory at 141 pounds, earning the decision over #18 Josh Strait.
Redshirt freshman Kyle McIntosh kept up the winning ways, using an impressive come-from-behind victory at 149 pounds to knock off Steve Hernandez, 8-7, and put ASU 21-0.
The Sun Devils would drop the matches at 157, 165 and 174 pounds – all by decision – before Kevin Radford earned the victory at 184 pounds courtesy of a medical forfeit to give ASU a 27-9 victory and improve the team to 5-2 on the dual season.
ASU is now 9-0-0 all time against the Broncos and earned their first win of the conference season in the process.

Nebraska 42, Arizona State 0
An overtime loss by #14 Levi Cooper in the second match set the tone for the entire competition as Arizona dropped its third dual of the season to Nebraska, 42-0.
Cooper and #10 Tucker Lane couldn’t settle things in regulation and went on to overtime tied at one. Neither scored in the first sudden death session, taking the bout to the two thirty-second rounds. Lane scored an escape in the first 30 second period and Cooper was unable to get away from Lane’s grasp during the second thirty seconds as he dropped just his sixth match of the year, 2-1.
The Sun Devils couldn’t recover from there, dropping every bout in the match en route to being shut out for the first time since 2008 and just the fifth time in school history.
Nebraska’s 42 points tied for the most ever scored against the Sun Devils, matching the 42-0 score that was posted by Oklahoma State in 1996 and Oregon State in 1969.
Arizona State dropped to 5-3 on the dual season while Nebraska improved to 9-0 – its best start in program history.
Arizona State will look to recover against another tough opponent next week as the team hosts Iowa State in Wells Fargo Arena on Jan. 3 beginning at 7 p.m.
