SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The Arizona State women’s tennis team had a successful day in doubles competition, Friday, at the ITA Southwest Regional in San Diego, Calif.

The doubles pairs of Nicole Smith and Joanna Smith earned two victories on the day. Smith/Smith defeated Dallara/Rozenberg of Long Beach State, 8-6, in the round of 64 and then went on to defeat the pair of Brown/Claus of USD, 9-7.

The doubles pair of Leighann Sahagun and Sianna Simmons also earned a victory on Friday, defeating UC Riverside’s McKay/Raney, 9-7 in the round of 32. The pair had a bye in the first round.

Both Smith/Smith and Sahagun/Simmons compete tomorrow in the doubles round of 16.

In singles play, Michelle Brycki and Hannah James fell to their opponents in the round of 32. USC’s Danielle Lao defeated James, 6-2, 6-1, while fellow Trojan Sabrina Santamaria defeated Brycki, 6-1, 6-3.

Freshman Joanna Smith also earned a pair of victories in the singles consolation round.

The third round of the ITA Southwest Regional continues tomorrow from San Diego, Calif.
