GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Four members of the Arizona State University wrestling team remained undefeated on the day with their third individual wins in as many duals, but their victories did not accumulate enough team points as the Sun Devils dropped their second dual in a row at the Lone Star Duals, this time in a 27-18 decision to No. 19 American. The Sun Devils are now 5-6 on the year following the loss.
Anthony Robles (125), Jake Meredith (184), Luke Macchiaroli (197) and Levi Cooper (heavyweight) each won for the third time in a row today with Robles and Cooper each collecting their third bonus-point victory in as many tries as well. Robles opened the dual with the Eagles by scoring a 15-0 technical fall over Thomas Williams, giving the senior his third technical fall win of the day and posting a 5-0 lead for the team.
The Eagles went on to win the next six matches in a row to build an insurmountable lead of 27-5 with three matches remaining. David Prado lost a 13-5 major decision at 133 to Kevin Tao before Kalin Goodsite dropped a 6-2 decision at 141 to No. 14 Matt Mariacher, putting the Eagles ahead for good, 9-5. From there, Tai Fukumoto dropped a 16-0 technical fall to No. 19 Ganbayar Sanjaa before Sean McCarty won by forfeit at 157.
At 165 pounds, Te Edwards took on Steve Fittery, the top-ranked and undefeated 157-pound wrestler. Edwards battled, but eventually fell, 13-7, before AU won by forfeit at 174 for their final points. Meredith scored a 16-5 major decision at 184 over Tom Barreiro before Macchiaroli scored a 3-2 decision over Danny Mitchell at 197. Cooper won by heavyweight to cap the dual with six final points for the Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils have one dual in Texas remaining as they face No. 9 (Division II) Central Oklahoma at 6 p.m.
