TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field team closed out the final day of competition at the MPSF Indoor Championships with the No. 25 women placing fourth overall and the men taking fifth in the meet that was held at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle. The women were led again by individual champion Jasmine Chaney, who successfully defended her 400m dash title, while the men had a pair of runners-up in Daniel Auberry (60m) and Jordan Clarke (shot put).
The team titles went to No. 1 Oregon on the women’s side and No. 6 Stanford on the men’s side. UO scored 138.0 points to take the crown with the women’s Top 5 being rounded out by No. 12 Arizona (128.0), No. 23 Stanford (96.5), ASU (92.0) and host Washington (62.5). In the men’s standings, SU scored 107.5 and was followed by No. 14 UA (102.0), UCLA (82.5), No. 12 UO (79.0) and ASU (72.5).
Chaney, already the 200m dash champion from the day before, won the 400m dash title for the second year in a row, this time by running 53.68 to add 10 points to the team’s total. Chaney also scored in the 60m hurdles as she finished fourth in 8.40. Two other sprint events earned points for the women as the 4x400m relay of Sarah Geren, Kayla Sanchez, Alycia Herring and Keia Pinnick ran 3:38.05 to place third overall while Dominique’ Maloy finished sixth in the 60m dash final with a time of 7.55.
The men’s second-place showings came by slim margins as Auberry ran 6.84 while the winner broke the tape in 6.80 in the 60m dash. In the field, Clarke posted a toss of 17.80m (58-04.75), which was 1cm shy of the winner, who hit a mark of 17.81m. Both finishes earned eight points each for the team.
The track events continued to add points for the men as seven times placed a Sun Devil in the Top 8, including two finishes in the 400m dash. In that event, William Henry (47.35) and Kelsey Caesar (47.52) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while both joined John Kline and Ryan Healy to run 3:11.25 for a third place finish in the 4x400m relay. Justin Freeman (60m dash) and Nick Happe (3,000m run) both added fifth place finishes with time of 6.88 and 8:02.37, respectively, with Happe’s time standing as the fifth-best in school history as well. Rounding out the point earners for the men on the track were Nectaly Barbosa (800m) and Darius Terry (mile), who placed seventh in 1:51.69 and eighth in 4:08.67, respectively. Terry’s time is the seventh-best in school history.
The field events for the women saw four Sun Devils score while posting two Top 10 all-time marks as well. Anna Jelmini led the way with her third-place finish in the shot put (16.40m/53-09.75) while Christabel Nettey posted a mark of 12.13m (39-09.75) to finish sixth in the triple jump and move into No. 2 on ASU’s all-time list. In the pole vault, Shaylah Simpson finished tied for fifth place and Cara Carpenter tied for seventh as both cleared 4.01m (13-01.75). For Carpenter, that clearance moved her to No. 4 on the all-time lists and the fifth Sun Devil woman to clear 13-feet indoors.
The final two scorers for the men were Bryan McBride and Jamie Sandys. McBride was seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 2.09m (6-10.25) while Sandys scored 5,029 points in the seven-event heptathlon. For Sandys, his personal best in the event moved him up to No. 2 all-time in school history and made him just the second Sun Devil to score over 5,000 points in the event.
Next weekend, the Sun Devils will send athletes to some of the Last Chance Meets that will be hosted throughout the nation. Those meets will be the final time this indoor season that athletes can qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 11-12) in College Station, Texas.
