TEMPE - Three members of the Arizona State University wrestling team won their final regular season matches, but the team fell in the final dual of the year as host Stanford won 7-of-10 matches to take a 28-11 score on Sunday afternoon inside Burnham Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif. The loss dropped the Sun Devils to a final record of 5-13 (1-4 Pac-10) while the Cardinal ended the year with a 9-9-1 record (4-2 Pac-10).

The dual opened at 141 pounds with Josh Sandoval dropping a 10-5 decision to Jordan Gray to put the hosts ahead, 3-0. The lead grew to 7-0 after the 149 match as Carlos Castro lost a 14-3 major decision to Donovan Halpin. SU’s lead grew to 13-0 after ASU forfeited the 157 match.

But, the Cardinal won the next three matches, including a forfeit at 174 (19-3) and a 3-2 win for Spence Patrick at 184 over ASU’s Jake Meredith (22-3). SU also won a 10-3 decision at 197 as No. 15 Zack Giesen downed Luke Macchiaroli to bring the team score to 25-3.

Levi Cooper was up next at heavyweight and won a close, 2-1, decision in the tiebreaker to give ASU three more points before No. 1 Anthony Robles took five more points for the Sun Devils with his 18-1 technical fall over Matt Sencenbaugh at 125.
