Jan. 28, 2011

TEMPEJasmine Chaney smashed her indoor personal best time in the 200m dash, John Kline posted an impressive run in the 600m run and 11 different student-athletes made their debuts as the Arizona State University track and field team wrapped up a successful first day of competition at the New Mexico Invitational being held at the Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday night. Chaney’s effort in the 200m dash earned her an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships and led the way for the team.

In the first race of the season for the Sun Devils, Chaney stepped onto the banked, 200m oval and pushed herself onto several lists as she won the event in 23.32, lowering her personal-best indoor time from 24.45, to record the second-fastest time in school history. Her mark also ranks her among the Top 5 nationally so far this year. Following Chaney across the line was Kayla Sanchez, who ran 24.25 to finish fifth overall and post the eighth-best time in school history.

Two men’s marks turned in on the day also found their ways into the record books. First, on the track, John Kline won the 600m run (an event not contested at the NCAA Championships) and clocked in at 1:17.59, breaking the previous facility record of 1:19.18. He led an overall finish of 1-4-5 in the event as Mason McHenry (1:22.03) and Nectaly Barbosa (1:22.11) finished behind him. In the field, rookie Bryan McBride cleared 2.04m (6-08.25) to take runner-up honors in the high jump while posting the 10th-best clearance in school history.

Three Sun Devils also finished second in their respective events, including two in the pole vault and one in the long jump. For the women, Linda Kuenzi was second in the unseeded section of the pole vault with her best of 3.45m (11-03.75) while the men’s unseeded section of the event saw Cory Kraft take second with a clearance of 4.62m (15-01.75). Christabel Nettey was second in the long jump for the women with her mark of 5.97m (19-07.00).

Overall, ASU athletes posted 29 marks/results on the day with 22 finishing in the Top 10 of their events. The men’s 200m dash saw five of ASU’s six entrants place in the Top 8 while all four women in the long jump also placed in the Top 8.

The UNM Invitational continues on Saturday with many of the Sun Devils competing once again and others entering the meet for the first time this season.
