MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 21 Arizona State women's soccer team concluded its weekend road trip to the Los Angeles area with a 0-0 tie at Pepperdine on Sunday.

The game was a defensive struggle as the two teams combined for only five shots on goal - Pepperdine (3), ASU (2). Although the Sun Devils (6-2-2) were held scoreless for the third consecutive game, ASU head coach Kevin Boyd was encouraged by what he saw from his team against Pepperdine (6-3-2) on Sunday.

"We played better," Boyd said. "We certainly looked like ourselves a little bit more. We were battling and fighting and scrambling to try and create something and put pressure on them. Pepperdine is a good team and a very difficult place to play. Their field is quite small and because of that it puts a lot more pressure on you and it's much more difficult to create anything.

"After a few down games we came out and showed up again which we're encouraged by. Now we have to find that scoring touch again."

Overall the Sun Devils were outshot by Pepperdine 14-11 and took five fewer corner kicks (7-2) than the Wave.

Senior forward Karin Volpe lead ASU with three shots while senior midfielder Alexandra Elston had two. Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore made three saves to record her third shutout of the season.

The Sun Devils, who are now 13-3-4 (.725) in non-conference games the last two seasons, will have next weekend off before they return to action on Friday, October 8 for their Pac-10 opener at Washington State.
