TEMPE, Ariz. - Kole Calhoun had three hits, including a home run, to lead the No. 3 Arizona State University baseball team to a 10-4 win over Oregon State on Friday in front of 3,003 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improve to 44-6 overall, 17-5 in the Pac-10, with the victory.
Calhoun reached base in all five of his plate appearances and drove in three runs to pace ASU at the plate. His two-run homer in the third inning was his team-best 11th of the season. Deven Marrero had three hits and drove in two runs, and Zack MacPhee added two hits in the game.
Seth Blair went seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while matching his career high with nine strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 10-0 on the season. Mitchell Lambson and Jake Barrett each pitched scoreless innings of relief to finish off the victory.
ASU got on the board with a run in the second on an RBI groundout by Austin Barnes, and Calhoun's two-run homer in the third then made it 3-0. Oregon State got a run in the fourth, but the Sun Devils got it back with an RBI groundout by Johnny Ruettiger in the fifth.
MacPhee and Calhoun had back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth to put ASU ahead 6-1, but the Beavers cut into the lead on a three-run, pinch-hit home run by Matt Boyd in the top of the seventh. However, the Sun Devils would answer back, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the seventh and then adding two more in the eighth on a two-run double by Marrero.
The Sun Devils will continue their three-game series with Oregon State on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Arizona.
