TEMPE – Five members of the Arizona State University track and field program completed the second of two days of competition at the Jim Click Multis in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday with the two Sun Devil women finishing with scores that rank among the program’s all-time Top 10. Three men also competed in the two-day event with two of those Sun Devils placing in the Top 8 to score team points.
In the women’s heptathlon, freshman Keia Pinnick scored 5,017 points to place fourth overall and Samantha Henderson was fifth in the standings as she scored 4,746 points with both women placing ahead of all other collegiate entries. Bettie Wade (unattached) won the event with 5,937 points.
Pinnick, who now ranks sixth all-time in program history after her first collegiate heptathlon, opened her day with a leap of 5.33m (17-06.00) to earn 651 points in the long jump before adding 519 points in the javelin with a toss of 32.21m (105-8). In the final event of the day, Pinnick finished second in the 800m run with a quick 2:17.01 to add 865 points to her total and break the 5,000 point barrier.
Henderson, who posted the eighth-best mark all-time in program history, opened her day with 720 points in the long jump with a mark of 5.57m (18-03.25) before scoring 545 points in the javelin with a throw of 33.61m (110-03). Her final 456 points came in the 800m run as she clocked in at 2:50.73.
In the men’s decathlon, Jamie Sandys led the Sun Devils with 6,357 points to finish seventh overall with Austin Prince just behind him in eighth place and 6,309 points. Jeremy Marcinko was 11th for ASU with 6,151 points while former UA competitor Jake Arnold won the overall title with 7,832 points.
Sandys, who moved up three positions on the day from 10th place after day one, opened his day with 682 points in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.46 before adding 570 points in the discus with a toss of 35.33m (115-11). He added 617 points with a clearance of 4.00m (13-01.25) in the pole vault before posting 528 points in the javelin with a toss of 45.91m (150-07). Sandys capped the competition with a time of 4:46.27 in the 1,500m run for 641 points.
Prince also moved up in the standings after the final day as he climbed one position from ninth to finish eighth overall. He opened the day with 587 points in the 110m hurdles after running 17.36 and scored 376 points in the discus with a mark of 25.47m (83-7). Prince then finished second overall in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80m (15-09.00) to add 849 points to his total before scoring another 574 in the javelin with a toss of 48.99m (160-9). In the 1,500m run, he ran 4:54.16 to add 594 more points to his total and score one team point for ASU by taking eighth overall.
Marcinko, like his teammates, improved his placement from the first day to climb two positions and finish in 11th after being in 13th through the first half. He scored 682 points in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.96 before adding 500 points in the discus with a mark of 31.81m (104-4). In the pole vault, he cleared 4.70m (15-05.00) to add 819 points before scoring 554 points in the javelin with a toss of 47.65m (156-4). In the final event, he posted a time of 4:58.46 in the 1,500m run to add the final 569 points of his overall score.
Next up for the Sun Devils will be the 31st Sun Angel Track Classic that will take place April 9-10 at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe.
