The Sun Devils pulled out a 56-46 victory in a defensive battle against Oregon State. Derek Glasser scored 16 points and Jerren Shipp added 11 points and six rebounds to help ASU improve to 17-8 overall, 7-5 in the Pac-10.
After allowing five consecutive opponents to drop 70 plus points, the Sun Devils stepped up the defensive effort. The Beavers were held to 24.6 percent from the field, the lowest percentage for an ASU Pac-10 opponent in 23 years. Oregon State's Calvin Haynes scored 15 points, but was 5-22 from the field.
"It seemed like we were a step quicker than we have been," senior point guard Derek Glasser said of the defensive effort.
ASU made 5-6 late in the first half to allow for a 26-18 lead going into the locker room. The Beavers never came within five after that point. Losing eight of ten games on the road, the Beavers dropped to 10-13, 4-7 in conference play.
Jerren Shipp's consistent play off the bench was the perfect spark for the Sun Devils. Shipp has spent hours after practice improving his shot and it seems to have paid off. Ever since Shipp became Coach Herb Sendik's first signed recruit in the spring of 2006 and started 22 games as a freshman, his playing time has decreased, but Shipp has continued to work and has been helpful for the Sun Devils when needed.
"It says volumes about him," Sendek said. "He's had different roles. There have been games he hasn't played. He's played different positions. And the only thing he cares about is winning. His individual recognition, role (or) place never distracts him from his goal of winning."
