RESULTS: NOTRE DAME (pdf) | ASU INVITE (pdf)

TEMPE – The Arizona State University cross country program divided its ranks on Friday afternoon with athletes competing in a pair of events, including the team’s top men finishing 11th at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., while a handful of Sun Devils competed in the 2010 ASU Invitational at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Both meets saw several Sun Devils compete well on the day in the team’s final tune-up before the NCAA Pre-National meet in two weeks.

At Notre Dame, Ben Engelhardt turned in a very strong performance and he placed 12th overall in the 8,000m blue race, covering the Notre Dame 9-Hole Golf Course path in 24:10. He as followed across the finish line by Darius Terry (24:46), Nick Happe (25:09), Daniel Lovell (25:15) and Doug Smith (25:25), who placed 47th, 68th, 76th and 89th, respectively, to round out the team scoring for ASU. Three others also ran in the race, including Steven Schnieders (104th, 25:43), Cameron Liston (118th, 25:58) and Dylan Hatcher (139th, 26:22).

Overall, the men scored 289 points and finished 11th overall, just one point shy of tying Indiana State for 10th. No. 3 Oregon won the race with 69 points and was followed in the Top 5 by No. 16 New Mexico (78 points), No. 21 Florida State (99) and a pair of unranked teams in Tulsa (196) and Penn State (205). The 18th-ranked Sun Devils did finish ahead of two ranked teams, including No. 27 Butler (12th) and No. 14 Villanova (13th).

Back in the desert, the Sun Devils also played host to the ASU Invitational, which was again part of the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival, an event with 17 total races, including two collegiate races, one community race and 14 high school runs. ASU did not figure into the team scoring as they had just four finish in each race (five are needed to score as a team).

In the women’s 5,000m race, Catherine Loden led the way as she was third overall in 18:42.7. The remaining three Sun Devils all placed in the Top 8, including Brianna Smith (19:00.1), Camille Olson (19:05.2) and Natasa Vulic (19:35.0), who placed fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively. On the men’s side, Sean Newport was the top Sun Devil in the race as he was 15th overall in 15:51.3. The remaining three Sun Devils included Michael Rodriguez (16:02.8), Mason McHenry (16:32.1) and Matt Boughton (16:35.6), who placed 21st, 31st and 32nd, respectively.

The Sun Devils will now take a week off from competition before returning to the Hoosier State on Saturday, October 15, when both the men and women take part in the NCAA Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind. The races the Sun Devils will run will be determined in two weeks and announced then.
