AUSTIN, Texas – Led by spectacular sprinting in the 400m distance, the Arizona State University track and field team added five more entries to the NCAA Championship finals in two weeks as the second of three days of competition at the NCAA Preliminary Round West came to a close Friday night at Mike A. Meyers Track and Soccer Stadium in Austin, Texas. Four different sprinters, including three women, secured berths to Eugene, Ore., while Jason Lewis punched his ticket in his second throwing event of the weekend.
For the second day in a row, several of the 400m sprinters turned in solid times with four of those runners breaking into the program’s all-time Top 10 list. On the men’s side, Donald Sanford won his heat of the 400m dash in 45.25 and finished second overall to earn a berth into the national meet in Eugene. His time ranks as the ninth-fastest in ASU history. Joel Phillip (46.62) and Justin Kremer (47.40) both ran in the event as well and finished 14th and 22nd, respectively, but did not advance to Eugene.
In the women’s 400m dash, Dominique’ Maloy lowered her personal-best time for the second day in a row, this time running 52.69 to finish at the 10th overall qualifier to Eugene. Her time also ranks as the ninth-best in school history. Her 4x400m relay teammates, Jasmine Chaney and Keia Pinnick, also moved up the record list in the 400m hurdles, running the fifth and sixth-best times in program history, respectively. Chaney took second in her heat in 57.67 while Pinnick was just behind her in third place at 58.03, out-leaning her closest opponent to earn the automatic berth into the meet in Eugene.
Chaney also competed in the first round of the 100m hurdles and advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday by running 13.41 in her heat to ran sixth overall. Christabel Nettey also was in the same competition and ran 13.90 to finish 33rd overall. Cheney will look to finish in the Top 12 of the event to move on to Eugene in her second individual event and also will try to help both relays to the national final as well on Saturday.
Lewis, for the second day in a row, earned an automatic berth into the national finals, this time as the top qualifier in the hammer. A qualifier in the shot put one day earlier as the third-place finisher in the west, Lewis took the hammer competition with a toss of 66.31m (217-7). He will try to add the discus to his Eugene schedule when he competes Saturday, along with Ryan Whiting and Jordan Clarke.
Several other Sun Devils competed on the day in an attempt to qualify for the trip to Eugene with one coming the closest without making the national final field. In the women’s long jump, Nettey posted a mark of 6.20m (20-04.25), but was one centimeter shy of 12th place, which was the cut-off for advancement. In the same event, Constance Ezugha was 29th with a jump of 5.89m (19-04.00).
ASU had two other individuals compete in field events, including Cj Navarro, who was 22nd in the women’s discus (47.75m/156-8) and Austin Prince in the men’s pole vault, who tied for 23rd (4.95m/16-02.75). On the track, five individuals ran but were unable to advance past today. Those runners included Ray Miller in the 200m dash (28th, 21.39); Mason McHenry in the 800m run (22nd, 1:51.58); and the women’s steeplechase trio of Cherise McNair (21st, 10:44.00), Kauren Tarver (28th, 10:48.56) and Angela Spadafino (43rd, 11:09.59).
Along with those advanced from Friday’s action (Chaney), the Sun Devils will see eight individuals and three relays compete on Saturday, the final day of competition. Lewis, Whiting and Clarke all will compete in the discus and Brandon Bethke, Zeke Van Patten, Jeff Helmer and Daniel Lovell all will run in the 5,000m while Samantha Henderson will compete in the high jump for the women. The women’s 4x100m relay of Maloy, Kayla Sanchez, Nettey and Chaney will run early in the day while the 4x400m relays will close out the day. The men will send out Kremer, Allante Battle, Sanford and Phillip while the women’s team will be comprised of Maloy, Sanchez, Pinnick and Chaney.
