TEMPE – Several members of the Arizona State University track and field team competed at the Iowa State Last Chance meet in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday with seven NCAA provisional qualifying marks turned in by the Sun Devils on the final day athletes could post marks toward making the national field. Two of those marks, both which came from the 4x400m relays, improved upon times recorded earlier in the season and also moved those athletes up higher on the ASU all-time Top 10.
In the final two races of the meet, the Sun Devil relays took to the track with the women’s team of Dominique’ Maloy, Keia Pinnick, Kayla Sanchez and Jasmine Chaney up first. The team clocked in at 3:37.36 to finish sixth overall and also posted the ninth-fastest time in program history. In the men’s 4x400m relay, the team of Donald Sanford, Justin Kremer, Ray Miller and Joel Phillip combined to run 3:06.70 and finish second overall. Their time, which was just 0.20 seconds from meeting the automatic qualifying standard, also ranks as the fourth-best all-time in program history.
One other Sun Devil also turned in a provisional qualifying time that was an improvement upon an earlier recorded mark as Mason McHenry ran 1:48.04 to win the 800m run. His time moved him into the Top 12 nationally and missed the automatic qualifying standard by 0.04 seconds.
Men’s runners that also posted provisional qualifying times included Lawrence Trice in the 60m dash (6.70) and Justin Kremer in the 400m dash (47.16) to place second and third, respectively. The women saw Chaney record a pair of provisional times in the 60m hurdles as she ran 8.38 in the preliminary round and followed that run up with a time of 8.34 in the finals to place third overall.
Those Sun Devils that are selected from the provisional qualification list will compete in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships next Friday and Saturday (March 12-13) in Fayetteville, Ark.
