Mary Atkinson and Stephanie Hangartner went first and second in the all-around to lead the Arizona State University women's gymnastics team to a win over Washington. The No. 25 Sun Devils used their best road score of the season to defeat the No. 24 Huskies 195.65-195.425. The Sun Devils are now 2-6 (2-2 Pac-10). Atkinson scored 39.175 to win the all-around competition while Hangartner earned 38.875 to finish runner-up.
The Gym Devils began on bars, where they are ranked 18th nationally. Despite ordinarily being strong on the event, the Sun Devils suffered several uncharacteristically low scores and scored a 48.6. Francesca Mercurio put together a nice set as she nailed her routine for a career-best 9.85 and tied for first. Hangartner got off to a good start as she scored a solid 9.725. Sophomore Kahoku Palafox was the next highest scoring Sun Devil, with a 9.7. Nicole Johnson earned a 9.675 while Atkinson tallied a 9.65 to contribute to the Sun Devils' team score.
Vault proved to be a much better rotation as they recouped to put together their best team vault score of the season. Atkinson led the Sun Devils on vault as she has all season and tied her career-high of 9.9 for the third time this season. Callie Price earned a career-best 9.85 for the second consecutive meet. Carly McMahon and Amelia Rew each put out personal-best scores. McMahon was given a 9.825 while Rew earned a 9.8. The Sun Devils also counted Kaitlynn Bormann's 9.725 to tally a season-high 49.1.
The team kept the momentum up as they headed over to floor, where they are ranked 24th. Atkinson and Johnson were the Sun Devils' high scorers for the second consecutive meet with each scoring 9.85 to tie for first. Hangartner tied her career-high with a 9.825 and Madison Snowden matched that score. Mercurio earned her best floor score of the season with a 9.75 to bring the Sun Devils' team score to a season-best 49.1.
For the second straight meet, the Sun Devils were able to earn a new season-best on beam. Bormann was given a 9.8 after just a small bobble. Kelly Reilly tied Bormann's score for a new career-best. Atkinson tied her career-high on beam with a 9.775 while Mercurio earned her best beam marks of the season with a 9.75. Hangartner capped a solid night with a 9.725 and the Sun Devils scored 48.85 on beam.
The Sun Devils head home next week to host Stanford. The meet begins at 7:30 on Friday, Feb. 19.
