FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Ryan Whiting completed his sweep of the shot put national crowns and Sarah Stevens took runner-up honors to lead the Arizona State University track and field program on the second day of action at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark., on Thursday.
With their points, both Sun Devil teams have moved in ties for fourth place in the early team standings. Oregon leads the men's race through four events with 20 points and is followed by Arkansas (14), Arizona (11) and both ASU and Florida State (10). On the women's side, Florida leads the way with 13 points and is followed by Florida State (12), Providence (10) and a four-way tie of eight points by ASU, BYU, San Diego State and Oregon.
Whiting, the national leader in the shot put, closed out the season on top as he threw 20.11m (65-11.75) to claim his first outdoor crown in the event to go with the two he won over the past two seasons indoors. With the win, he not only scored 10 points for the team, but also swept the indoor and outdoor titles, marking the 18th time in the past 45 years a man has accomplished the sweep. He is the 12th member of this elite club and the first since 2007 when USC's Noah Bryant accomplished the feat.
Stevens, the program's all-time All-American, claimed her 13th career honor as she took second in the shot put with a toss of 17.58m (57-08.25). For Stevens, it marked the fourth year in a row that she placed among the Top 6 in the nation in the event, including finishes of fourth, third and sixth over the past three seasons. Her eight points scored also moved her past Jacquelyn Johnson for the most scored by one ASU athlete, bringing her total to 83.
Also in the field on Thursday were the qualifying rounds of the discus where all four Sun Devil entries advanced to the finals on Saturday. The women were up first with Stevens and freshman Cj Navarro placing fifth and eighth, respectively. Stevens hit a mark of 52.87m (173-05) while Navarro advanced with a toss of 51.43m (168-09). In the men's event, Whiting finished eighth in 58.21m (191-00) while Jason Lewis took ninth in 58.02m (190-04), allowing both men to advance to their second event final of the meet.
On the track, only one final was held for the women with Ali Kielty starting in the 10,000m run, but was unable to finish the race. The women advanced in several events on the day, including the 4x400m relay, the 100m hurdles and the 200m dash. Jasmine Chaney advanced to the semifinals of the 100m hurdles with the 16th-best time (13.62) while both Charonda Williams (23.54) and Dominique' Maloy (23.37) advanced to the semifinal of the 200m dash. In that semifinal, Williams lowered her school record time to 22.71 to advance to the finals as the fifth-seed while Maloy was 13th overall in 23.35 and missed qualifying for the final.
Both Chaney and Maloy also competed in the semifinal of the 4x400m relay with Shauntel Elcock and Jeavon Benjamin joining the team as the Sun Devils won their heat and qualified third overall in 3:33.75. The men's relay of Lawrence Trice, Allante Battle, Justin Kremer and Ray Miller also ran in the semifinals, but did not advance with the 17th-best time of 3:09.15. Battle also ran in the 200m dash first round, but was 21st in 21.58 and did not advance.
On Friday, ASU will have several athletes in finals of their events, including Stevens and Lewis in the hammer; Brandon Bethke in the men's 5,000m run, Williams in the 100m dash and with the 4x100m relay; and Chaney will compete in the semifinal of the 100m hurdles.
