Westwood, Calif. – Hillary Bach threw her ninth complete-game shutout of the season while Kaitlin Cochran extended her home run hitting streak to seven consecutive games Friday afternoon in Westwood as the fourth-ranked ASU softball team took down the seventh-ranked Bruins of UCLA 5-0. The Sun Devils are now 32-5 and 4-0 in Pac-10 play while UCLA drops to 26-7 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
The Sun Devils jumped on the board early as Kaylyn Castillo came in to smother the first pitch she saw in the second inning with a home run to left field off the scoreboard. Kaitlin Cochran, not to be outdone, crushed a 1-0 pitch out of the 90210 zip code via right center to kick-off ASU’s scoring rout in the third. The home run gives Cochran a long ball in the last seven consecutive games.
To continue the scoring spree in the third, Lesley Rogers followed Cochran’s home run with a double to left field, where Kaylyn Castillo, Katie Crabb and Caylyn Carlson all followed up with RBI hits as ASU rattled off four runs in the inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
The day belonged to Hillary Bach though as the freshman standout threw her ninth complete-game shutout of the season against the potent UCLA offense, allowing only seven hits and striking out six on the day to push her record to 18-1 on the year. The game will be aired tomorrow in Arizona on FSN at 4:30 p.m.
The Sun Devils will travel again tonight as they head to Seattle to take on the third-ranked Washington Huskies tomorrow at 3 p.m. PT at the Husky Softball Complex.
