TEMPE, Ariz. – Kaitlin Cochran did it again Friday night, setting another ASU record, hitting her 19th homerun on the season, besting her 2007 record of 18 homeruns, and breaking the single season homerun record previously held by Mindy Cowles in 2008 with eighteen, as the Sun Devils went on to beat the Washington Huskies 9-2. Hillary Bach was on the mound, giving up only six hits with six strikeouts on the night, giving her a 22-3 record for the year. This win puts ASU at 7-4 in the conference and 37-9 overall as the Huskies drop to 7-5 in the conference and 34-8 overall.
The Sun Devils lit up the scoreboard first against the Huskies with an RBI to center field by Kaylyn Castillo scoring Jessica Mapes from third giving ASU a one run advantage in the first. Continuing the Sun Devil offense in the third inning was Kaitlin Cochran who cracked a long ball over the center field fence to plate Lesley Rogers, to tally two RBI’s to give ASU a three run lead.
Answering Cochran’s homerun in the fourth was Washington’s Danielle Lawrie tallying her own homerun, scoring Jen Salling, bringing the Huskies back within one run. Without wasting any time, the Sun Devils fired back as Kaitlin Boyd hit a double to right center field putting her in scoring position as Krista Donnenwirth forced a throw to first on a pass ball strike out during her at bat, giving Boyd the chance to score from second. Continuing the scoring effort, a wild pitch from the Huskies’ pitcher Danielle Lawrie, allowed Katie Crabb to score from third. Rounding out the inning with a double that hit the left field wall, was Lesley Rogers who scored Caylyn Carlson and Jessica Mapes, who was pinch running for Renee Welty, to give the Sun Devils a comfortable five run lead going into the fifth inning.
Launching another two run long ball in the fifth was Mandy Urfer with a shot over dead center field scoring Katelyn Boyd who reached by a single hit through the right side, giving ASU their final runs for the night.
