FULLERTON, Calif. - The bats were working, but not in opportune moments Saturday afternoon as the sixth-ranked Sun Devil Softball squad outhit the tenth-ranked Michigan Wolverines but ultimately fell 7-3 in Day Three of the Judi Garman Classic. The Sun Devils are now 24-5 overall with one game remaining in the weekend.
The Wolverines bit first in the game as they opened the second inning with a lead-off single that was plated when third baseman Maggie Viefhaus launched a two-run shot to center field to start the commotion. ASU rallied back in the third to bring one home as well as Krista Donnenwirth lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Lesley Rogers.
Michigan's fourth inning proved to be a lethal one as the bats came out to play with the Wolverines cracking five hits to bring in four runs before ASU stopped the offensive attack. Michigan just wouldn't stay quiet though as they added one more insurance run in the sixth inning off two hits and an ASU error.
ASU showed signs of life in the top of the seventh however as A State put together a two-out rally starting with hits from Katelyn Boyd, Krista Donnenwirth, Caylyn Carlson and Kaylyn Castillo to add two to the score before Michigan slammed the door for the 7-3 final.
The Sun Devils will wrap the Judi Garman Classic tomorrow as they face the Notre Dame Fightin' Irish at 11 a.m. on the Main Field of the Anderson Family Complex.
