FULLERTON, Calif. – While Hillary Bach collected two wins on the day without giving up a run, her teammate Katelyn Boyd hit over .470 with four runs scored and five RBIs as ASU added two more wins to their tally, topping No. 23 DePaul 4-0 and Nebraska 11-6 Friday afternoon in Fullerton during day two of the Judi Garman Classic. The Sun Devils are now 24-4 overall with two games remaining in the weekend.
To open up the day, the Sun Devils faced off with the DePaul Blue Demons where Hillary Bach stepped in to shutout DU for her fifth shutout on the weekend. In the outing, Bach gave up only five hits and struck out six to silence the Demons.
In the offensive attack, ASU’s lead-off Jessica Mapes got the job done, as she went two-for-three with two RBIs on the day. ASU hit the board in the second as single for Katelyn Boyd and a fielder’s choice to Ashley Muenz were both plated by a big double to left-center from Kaylyn Castillo. Mapes added an RBI single to tally to complete the three-run second inning. Ashley Muenz’s RBI single in the sixth topped the ASU score at four after which Bach hit cruise control to close out the win.
Game two saw more of a roller-coaster ride for the Sun Devils as they pounced on the Nebraska Cornhuskers early putting four runs up on three hits, with a highlight from Katelyn Boyd with a two-RBI double down the left field line. A State’s O was back at it in the second inning adding three more runs on four hits, with Boyd again hitting a two-RBI double, this time to right center.
A Nebraska rally in the fourth saw the Huskers put four unearned runs on the board which saw the return of Hillary Bach to the circle for the rest of the outing to shut down the Husker offense. The fifth saw the Sun Devils bedazzle the crowd again as for the second consecutive day, Kaitlin Cochran dug in to hit a two run home run to center field, where she was immediately followed by Katelyn Boyd with a solo shot to center field cementing ASU’s 11-6 commanding lead.
The Sun Devils hit the diamond again tomorrow morning as the Judi Garman Classic continues. They take on the tenth-ranked Michigan Wolverine’s at 9 a.m. at Cal State Fullerton’s Anderson Family Main Field.
