LOS ANGELES - The Arizona State women's soccer team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday as USC defeated the Sun Devils 1-0 in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.
Neither team was able to take control during the first 45 minutes. While USC (9-3-0, 1-0-0 Pac-10) held a 5-3 advantage in shots, the Sun Devils (7-2-2, 0-1-0 Pac-10) took two more corner kicks (3-1) than the Trojans.
The stalemate would continue into the second half until USC broke through with the only goal of the game in the 57th minute. Trojan junior forward Megan Ohai would account for the goal when her shot from 20 yards found the lower left post.
Unlike previous games this season in which they would find a way to turn the tide after falling behind, the Sun Devils were unable to generate any offense to tie the game. USC would outshoot ASU 10-4 in the second half while taking twice as many corner kicks (4-2).
Junior midfielder Alexandra Elston and freshman forward Bianca Doller tied for the team lead in shots with two each. Freshman Alyssa Gillmore made the first start of her career in place of injured senior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri and made six saves.
The Sun Devils return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they face third-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles.
