TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's soccer team's winless streak reached five games on Friday following a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss at Arizona.
ASU (7-5-3, 0-4-1 Pac-10) was fighting uphill for much of the game after giving up a goal in the 15th minute to fall behind 1-0.
The Sun Devils finally got the equalizer in the 86th minute when redshirt freshman Courtney Tinnin poked the ball passed Arizona goalkeeper Devon Wharf, who was charging out of the goal, attempting to beat Tinnin to the ball.
The Sun Devils controlled much of the action in the second half and in the two overtimes and had a few near misses at the Arizona net both in regulation and in overtime.
Arizona (4-11-1, 1-4-0 Pac-10) would win in the game in the second overtime when freshman forward Alex Smith found the back of the net after the ball came her way on a free kick.
Freshman forward Bianca Doller, Tinnin and junior forward Karin Volpe had four shots each to tie for the team lead. Overall the Sun Devils had advantages in both shots (17-14) and corner kicks (4-1).
The Sun Devils return to action next weekend when they travel to the Bay Area to face Stanford (7 p.m. on Friday) and California (1 p.m. on Sunday).
Friday's game between the Sun Devils and Wildcats was part of The State Farm Territorial Cup Series, a multi-year marketing agreement with the athletic departments of Arizona State University and the University of Arizona to sponsor the rivalry athletic games and a special student competition between the two esteemed universities.
