TEMPE, Arizona – With a solo homerun by Caylyn Carlson and a total of three hits on the day, the fourth ranked ASU softball team couldn’t pull out the W as they fell to the second ranked UCLA 9-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon in Tempe. Hillary Bach took the loss on the day, dropping the Sun Devils to 7-5 in the conference and 37-10 overall as the Bruins go to 9-4 in the conference and 34-8 overall.

UCLA took an early lead in the first when pitcher Megan Langenfeld cracked a two run homer over the center field fence to score Megan Schroeder. Lefty hitter Gionna DiSalvatore kept the offense going when she took an inside pitch deep over the left field fence to plate Amanda Kamekona to give the Bruins a four run advantage.

After shutting down the ASU offense in 5 pitches, the second inning was no different for the UCLA offense. Andrea Harrison stepped up with two runners on and launched a long ball over the left field fence to score Monica Harrison and Katie Schroeder. Forcing a pitching change, ASU brought in Megan Elliot only to give up another homerun to Gionna DiSalvatore to put the Bruins up 8-0 going into the third inning.

Capping off the win in an early five innings was Andrea Harrison, with a line drive hit up the middle to score Katie Schroeder from second to give UCLA their final run of the game. Making a last ditch effort for a comeback was Caylyn Carlson with a solo shot, hitting one off a palm tree in left field, in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn’t enough to give the Sun Devils a chance for the win.

The Sun Devils will conclude their series against the Bruins tomorrow, April 26th at 12:00 at Farrington Stadium.
