TEMPE, Ariz. - Members of the Arizona State University track and field program competed in a pair of meets Friday with Jacquelyn Johnson earning an NCAA automatic berth in the pentathlon in Boise, Idaho, while the men's distance medley relay turned in a provisional qualifying time in Seattle. Johnson was the lone Sun Devil at Boise State's United Heritage Invitational while the men's DMR joined the women's DMR at the Washington Invitational.
Johnson turned in another strong set of results this week as she won her first pentathlon of the year by more than 300 points, scoring an NCAA automatic qualifying point total of 4,312, easily surpassing the needed 4,050 needed to earn a national berth. The two-time defending national champion in the pentathlon, Johnson won four of the five events, including the 60m hurdles (8.42), the high jump (1.81m/5-11.25), the long jump (5.94m/19-06.00) and the 800m run (2:22.89) while placing third in the shot put (12.13m/39-09.75).
Her overall point total broke the Jackson Indoor Track record of 3,914 points set in 2006 by Utah State's Lacey Hulbert. Johnson's marks in the high jump and the long jump also were personal bests for pentathlon competition while her time of 8.42 in the 60m hurdles also is an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
In Seattle, the relay team of Jack Mann, Erica Parker, Jordan Durham, D'Metra Macedon and Kari Hardt ran 11:57.08 to place ninth overall.
The Sun Devils will continue with events Saturday at both the Washington and Northern Arizona meets.
