AUBURN, Ala. - The Arizona State women's golf team shot a 12-over 300 to finish the first round of The Derby Invitational in fourth place. The Sun Devils are the lone team from west of the Mississippi River in the prestigious event held at the par 72 6,301-yard Auburn University Golf Club. Virginia leads at 1-over 289.
"We were a little cold today but tomorrow we're ready to turn up the heat!" says seventh year head coach Melissa Luellen.
Anna Nordqvist continued to bring out her solid play as she led the Sun Devils. Nordqvist is currently tied for second after shooting a 2-under 70. Nordqvist is currently one shot off the leader.
Azahara Munoz finished the first day tied for sixth. The returning NCAA champion shot an even par 72 in the first round.
"Anna and Aza played like the All-Americans they are today," said Luellen.
Jennifer Osborn carded a 6-over 78 to finish out the first round tied for 37th. Juliana Murcia shot an 8-over 80 while Liisa Kelo finished the day at 10-over 82.
The Sun Devils continue play through Sunday. The team tees off at 9:15 a.m.
