TEMPE, Ariz. – Daniel Lovell and Maureen Stringham were the top finishers for the Arizona State University cross country team while their unattached teammates, Brandon Bethke and Kate Lydy, won the men’s and women’s 5,000m race, respectively, at the Mesa Thunderbird Invitational Friday morning at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. The event featured one race with most of the men’s runners running a full 8,000m course and all women running a 5,000m course with the Sun Devil men also running the 5,000m race.
Lovell was the fourth overall finisher and first runner representing a university team as he broke the tape in 15:47, only seven seconds off the winning pace of Bethke (15:40). Fellow Sun Devils Alonso Contreras and Jeff Helmer (both running unattached to ASU) finished second (15:40) and third (15:46) overall, respectively, and freshman Matt Boughton (unattached) was fifth (15:48) while five of the seven Sun Devils in uniform placed in the Top 10. Collin Eckelman was sixth in 15:48 while Craig Nobles (15:57), Nectaly Barbosa (15:59) and Zach Mason (15:59) finished eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively. Michael Anderson (16th in 16:52) and Jordan Hall (23rd, 17:27) rounded out the uniformed runners for ASU.
For the second meet in a row at Kiwanis Park, Lydy (running unattached) was the top female finisher, this time lowering her winning time to 18:11 after winning the ASU Invitational in 18:20 two weeks ago. Lydy also placed 25th overall in the 56-person race and was followed across the line by her unattached teammates of Cherise McNair (second in 18:43) and Natasa Vulic (fourth in 19:01). Stringham was the top ASU runner in uniform as she was 12th among women’s runners in 19:57 while Rebecca Greenwald came in just behind her in 13th place at 20:04.
The remainder of the Sun Devil runners will compete Saturday morning at the NCAA Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., the site of the 2008 NCAA Championships. The women will run the 6,000m race at 11:35 a.m. EST while the men’s 8,000m race starts at 12:50 p.m. EST.
