BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After opening the year with a perfect 8-0 dual record, the Arizona State University wrestling team dropped its second road Pac-10 dual in as many days as the Sun Devils fell to CS Bakersfield, 22-13, Saturday afternoon inside the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif. The loss dropped the Sun Devils to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10 while the Roadrunners improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The dual opened at 197 pounds and the hosts grabbing a pair of victories for an early 6-0 lead. Jason Trulson looked to have the bout won at the opening weight for the Sun Devils, but gave up a takedown to tie the bout at seven with no time showing on the clock to force overtime where Garth Wara scored a takedown with 13 seconds remaining for the win. Quinton Pruett followed at heavyweight with an 11-5 loss.
The Sun Devils picked up their first victory of the day at 125 pounds where No. 16 Anthony Robles scored an 11-3 major decision before Todd Schavrien followed at 133 pounds with his pin of John Cardenas in 4:37 to give ASU a 10-6 lead. That lead was short lived as the Roadrunners won each of the next five bouts to push their advantage to 22-10 with one bout remaining. In the final bout of the day, No. 15 Brent Chriswell picked up a 12-7 decision over Riley Orozco to close the dual with the Sun Devils falling, 22-13.
ASU's road trip ends Sunday at CS Fullerton in a 2 p.m. dual in Fullerton, Calif.
