WACO, Texas - The Arizona State women's soccer team won its second consecutive contest defeating the Baylor Bears 1-0 on Friday night. The Sun Devils improved to 3-2-1 heading into their matchup with No. 7 Texas on Sunday while Baylor fell to 2-3.
Senior Carla Scanniello's first goal of the season and a stingy defensive effort by the Sun Devils proved to be the differences in the game. ASU outshot the Bears 7-3 and did not allow Baylor to take any shots on goal.
"Defensively we played sound the entire game and didn't allow them a single good chance to score," said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. "We did what we had to do to win the game and it came on the road which is definitely a step in the right direction."
Scanniello's goal, which came in the game's 11th minute, was setup by teammate Karin Volpe.
"The great thing is [Carla] was calm and put it away," said Boyd. "Karin played it across to her and she had to beat the keeper. It was a great goal and that's what you expect from a veteran player."
With Hurricane Ike continuing to make its way into the state of Texas, the Sun Devils will attempt to travel to Austin tomorrow for Sunday's game (1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT) with the Longhorns, who have won all five of their games this season. The Longhorns were originally scheduled to play the University of Houston tonight, however the game ended up being cancelled due to the threat of the hurricane, which affected Houston's ability to travel to Austin.
