The No. 4 Arizona State women's golf team is currently in third place at the NCAA Championships at the 6,424-yard, par-72 University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. Although two Sun Devils still have holes from round three left to play, the team has shot 28-over and are tied with Denver. The Sun Devils are currently 15 strokes behind leader USC and 12 strokes behind second place UCLA. The competition has been fighting weather issues all week as there was a lightening delay today and yesterday's play was suspended due to high winds. Play was called early again today due to nightfall.
Not only has Azahara Munoz been leading the Sun Devils through the tournament, she is also in first place in the competition. The junior All-American, who was named Golf World's Best Player You've Maybe Never Heard of this past December, will lead the field into the final day at 2-under 214 (69-72-73).
"I am thrilled that Aza is in contention for the national championship," said head coach Melissa Luellen.
Sophomore All-American Anna Nordqvist carded the Sun Devils low score of the round at even par. Nordqvist is currently tied for eighth at 4-over 220 (75-73-72).
"Our two stars Aza and Anna have been playing beautiful," said Luellen.
Junior All-American Jennifer Osborn is currently 20-over 236 (73-77-86). Two Sun Devils were unable to finish competition before nightfall. Currently on the 17th Hole, Juliana Murcia is 3-over on the day, putting her at 10-over total. Liisa Kelo is currently 9-over on the day with one hole left to play.
"If we can make pars on our last holes from round three tomorrow, we will be in the last group with USC and UCLA which will help us," said Luellen.
The NCAA Women's Golf Championships will conclude tomorrow. Live scoring can be found on www.golfstat.com.
