LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Arizona State men's swimming team placed fourth at the Pac-10 Championships. The Sun Devils fourth place finish is their best since 2003. The Sun Devils scored 371 points.
CJ Nuess was crowned the 2008 Pac-10 Champion in the 1,650 free. The senior clocked in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 14:55.84 to win the event. He is the 22nd ASU male swimmer to claim an individual Pac-10 title and the second ASU male to win the 1,650 free. He is third all-time on ASU's top ten list.
In the 200 back, Ante Cvitkovic placed sixth overall with an NCAA consideration time of 1:44.62. This time moves him to fourth on ASU's all-time list. Max Laney put his name on ASU's all-time list as he finished in 1:46.99 in the "A" final. Laney is now seventh all-time. Brandon Pierson competed in the "B" final.
Steve Neuwert put himself at eighth all-time in the 100 free. The senior captain touched in at 43.82, an NCAA consideration time, to finish fourth in the "A" final. Adrian Kirkpatrick competed in the "B" consolation, finishing in 45.93.
Freshman Collin Gladys moved to fifth all-time on ASU's top ten list in the 200 breast. He clocked in a time of 1:59.27 to finish third in the "A" consolation. Eddy Salcido touched in at 2:02.53 in the "B" final of the 200 breast, finishing fourth in the "B" final.
Sean Boyle tied for fourth in the 200 fly. The junior clocked in an NCAA consideration of 1:46.67. Alex Hier improved on his personal best time to win the "B" consolation with a time of 1:49.37.
The Sun Devils ended with the 400 free relay. The Devil relay team of Neuwert, Boyle, Mohammed Madwa and Vinicius Waked clocked in a time of 2:55.96, an NCAA consideration time. Neuwert's leadoff time also puts him at fifth all time on ASU's top ten list.
